Guest Post: Rediscovering Desire: Reigniting the Spark Within and Between You

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and while chocolates and flowers are lovely, what about a gift that truly nourishes your soul and rekindles the flame within?

Many of us, especially as we navigate the complexities of aging and relationships, find ourselves feeling disconnected. Disconnected from our bodies, our desires, and even our partners. Perhaps you're feeling a lack of sensuality, struggling with body image, or simply feeling "meh" about sex. Maybe you've drifted apart from your partner, lost in the busyness of life, or simply fallen into a rut.

This Valentine's Day, I invite you to rediscover your desire – that spark of aliveness that fuels your passion, your creativity, and your connection to yourself and others.

Reconnecting with Yourself:

It all starts with you. Here are a few ways to show yourself some love and reignite that inner flame:

✨ Embrace your inner goddess: Remember the woman you were (or dreamed you could be) before the world told you who you should be? She's still there, waiting to be rediscovered. Give yourself permission to explore your desires, express your sensuality, and celebrate your body, just as it is.

  • Easier said than done? It all starts with safety and that’s an inside job. Here’s a mindfulness practice to help you cultivate self-safety through presence:
  • Find a comfortable seated position and bring your focus inward. Notice your breath, without trying to change it, and envision yourself with a straight spine and an open heart. After a few moments, lengthen your breath as you inhale through your nose, drawing the air deep into your belly before slowly releasing it through your mouth. Repeat this cycle for a few minutes until your body feels calm and grounded. As you return to your regular breath, allow your awareness to drift through your body and notice any sensations of safety, presence, and pleasure.
  • Ready to turn up the heat? 🔥 From this grounded state, journal on the prompt “What might I desire?” and let your imagination run wild for 10-15 minutes.

✨ Show yourself some love: Imagine you have a date with the most interesting and attractive human you’ve ever met – you! Treat yourself to an adventure! Explore a new part of town, visit a museum, or take a hike in nature. Or maybe try a new hobby, learn a new skill, or simply spend an afternoon doing something that brings you joy. It's about expanding your horizons and rediscovering the wonder and excitement of life.

✨ Tap into your pleasure: Explore what brings you joy, both in and out of the bedroom. Awaken your senses and rediscover the pleasure of being in your body. Light some candles, put on your favorite music, and savor a delicious meal. Or maybe try a sensual self-massage, exploring your body with curiosity and appreciation (try a blindfold if you tend to get stuck in your head). It's about reconnecting with your sensuality and reigniting your own inner flame.

Reconnecting with Your Partner:

Once you've reconnected with yourself, you'll be amazed at how much easier it is to reconnect with your partner. Here are a few tips:

✨ Create Space: Renowned therapist Esther Perel suggests that while love seeks closeness, security, and knowing, desire thrives on mystery, novelty, and a bit of distance. In other words, too much predictability can dampen the flames of passion and a little space can go a long way in fostering desire. So pursue your own interests, cultivate your own friendships, and allow your partner to do the same – I promise it’s not selfish! This creates a sense of intrigue and allows you to come together with renewed appreciation.

✨ Communicate with Curiosity: Talk openly and honestly about your desires, fantasies, and what makes you feel good. Listen with an open heart and a willingness to learn and grow together.

  • Easier said than done? Dial up connection with the “Relationship Evolving Dyad (RED)” and watch the sparks fly. The RED is a structured exercise where partners take turns speaking and listening. One person responds to a prompt, sharing their thoughts, feelings, or experiences, while the other person listens with their full attention. The listener's role is not to respond, offer advice, or even agree, but simply to witness and seek to understand. You can get detailed instructions here: www.dramyseiberlich.com/RED

✨ Look with New Eyes: Remember what first sparked your attraction? Rekindle those flames by noticing your partner with a fresh perspective. What do you admire about them? What makes them unique? How have they grown and changed? Imagine you're seeing them for the first time—what would you notice? What would a stranger find captivating about them? This practice can reignite appreciation and spark a sense of rediscovery.

This Valentine's Day (and every day!), give yourself and your partner the gift of reconnection. Rediscover your desire, reignite the spark, and create a relationship that truly nourishes your soul.
